Hannah Nguyen's Excel 1 Project Overview

Introduction to Excel 1 Project:

This page is about this semester's one of the many Excel projects, the Excel 1 project for ISM 3011 Spring 2024. This project is designed to understand how to lookup information within a large dataset using Excel. Through the creation of this project, students will understand how to analyze data using different Excel functions. Through this project, I was able to grasp the different ways I can use a set of data to do many things.

The goal is to help students learn some basic skills in creating different types of work in order to understand the function and grasp some basic Excel skills that will be needed to help them in their future careers. The overall goal of this project is for students to understand how to use a large data set and make a lookup table using code. Use different mathematical functions and Excel functions. Also, be able to demonstrate the ability to create pivot tables and charts. Especially be able to interpret the information they created from the pivot table. Another student needed to be able to create filters from the large data given, be able to filter out specific data, and be able to interpret the information.

This project had written instructions on what and how different tasks needed to be done. But some skills from the Grade Calculator project needed to be used in this project, so information on old skills needed to be known to complete this one. Because instructions for those basic functions were not provided, the Excel 1 project encourages students to recall previously learned skills and encourages students to learn new skills too. Students are also encouraged to learn how to make all skills work together and be cohesive with one another. Overall, this project helps with Excel skills that later can be transferable to other projects that will be done in the future and for real-life use too.

Detailed Excel Formulas, Skills, and Techniques used:

  • MIN Function
  • SUM Function
  • Division Functions
  • IF: Conditional Functions this is used to change the conditions of cells and information helps with logical comparisons and true and false statements
  • Data Validation restricts some information to be entered and allows error messages to appear
  • date function making the data appear the data that it is opened
  • Name Ranges
  • Vlookup to find information from the other worksheets
  • Iferror to show if the information can not be found it wrong code is up in
  • Formatting making sure everything looked right, like merging, fonts, colors ,and etc.
  • Merging cells to make them bigger
  • Comments on different cells
  • Worksheet Protection to make sure that others can alter the information besides the area that can change the codes
  • Charts show to create them and understand how to manipulate them to show correct information
  • Pivot Tables & Charts
  • Filters to get information easily instead having to sort through it myself
  • How to create codes lookup
  • Text Box to analysis the information found

  • Conclusion:

Throughout the project, I was able to practice the previous skills I learned and also learn new skills to use in the near future. With that, I was able to understand its importance when it comes to filters and pivot tables, as well as how to execute them efficiently. In this project, I did face some challenges when it came to understanding how to create the Lookup page, which is the first picture above, but with perseverance, I was able to complete it with 100 percent accuracy. I am happy to say that I have a better understanding of the different ways I can use Excel. That means I can analyze data in a more efficient way that will be less time-consuming.
